Today as I awoke I felt a strong urgency to write about God’s love. In fact, when you know that God’s love is the most important thing in life you permit God to take the wheel in all areas of your life. As a result, you have “peace of God that surpasses all understanding” (Philippians 4:7, ESV). Because God knows what is best for His children. Sometimes, we are so focused as seeing God as king, sovereign, holy, lord, omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent that we forget that God is also Father. God as father says in his word that He is in your midst, He is mighty to save us; He rejoices over us with gladness; He quiets us with His love; He exults over us with loud song” (Zephaniah 3:17, ESV). Moreover, when I think of that I don’t see God as a supreme being, although He is, but I see Him as father.
God is king, sovereign, holy, lord, omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent, and savior but He is also father. He is the father who loves us, who dotes over us, who delights in us, who chases after us, who picks us up when we have fallen, and even sings over us like a baby cradled in their mothers arms. The word “love” is mentioned in the bible over 300 times, and in the New International Version it is mentioned 551 times. It is the action most talked about in the word of God and the least that is spoken of or mentioned when we speak. In fact, our sermons are full of how to be holy, how to not sin, how to walk in faith, how to prosper, how to be like God but few about how to have the characteristic that God’s word most speaks of, which is the love of a father.
It is important to note, that not only does God speak of His love as it pertains to individuals as his children, but also as love as it pertains to how people should love others. Therefore, I believe it is important that we bring love back into the forefront of our conversations. Why? Because so many are desperately seeking to be loved, not by a supreme being, but God as father. In fact, there was so much importance placed on love in the word of God that there is even a description of love. According to the bible love is patient, kind, it is not envious, it is not boastful, it is not proud, it does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres (1 Corinthians 13:4-6, NIV). This is how God as father teaches us to love others, but it also an example of how He loves us as father.
When an individual is inspired by God’s love they love others in the same fatherly way that God as father loves us. When an individual is empowered by God’s love they empower others to love in the same way that God loves them. When an individual is connected by God’s love they love others and show others how to be connected to the love of God. God’s love is the ultimate love of a father.
In my own personal experience finding God, I had trouble seeing him as Father. It was easy for me to see him as king, sovereign and all those other things, but it was so hard to see him as father. Why? Because I never experienced the love of a father in the way that God loves us. But when I let my guard down and permitted God to show me His love as a father, I can assure you there is not greater love. It fills every nook and cranny of your very being, and you will know what it feels like to be safe in the arms of a loving father. But God permits individuals the ability to make the choice to permit Him to come into their hearts, so that He can show them His love of a father. Why? Because He loves each person, so much He doesn’t want the individual to feel the pressure of being forced; if that person is not ready to receive Him.
My hope today is that this post sheds a little more love in the world. That we get back to understanding that without the love of God we are truly lost. We are one nation under God. God is not speaking of specific nations like the US or Africa, or Great Britain but all together are one nation under God’s love. We serve a God who is over the nations and that when we come together as one church body inspired, empowered, and connected the whole body together across the nations becomes one nation under God’s love.
